What is JPEG Format?

JPEG, short for Joint Photographic Experts Group, is an image format introduced in 1992 as part of the ISO/IEC 10918-1 standard. It uses a method called Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) to compress images. It breaks an image into 8×8 pixel blocks and reduces details that human eye is less sensitive to.

The format supports 24-bit color (over 16 million colors) and it’s excellent for natural photos, web images, and digital photography. JPEG does not support transparency or animation, however, which is why formats like PNG and GIF are used in those cases.
